Gayaji: The road journey from Gayaji to Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand, is emerging as a preferred option for travellers seeking a mix of natural landscapes, adventure and cultural experiences.

Motorists travelling by car or bike can choose from three major routes connecting the two cities. Each offers varying travel conditions, scenery and attractions, ranging from forested hills and coal mining belts to historic Anglo-Indian settlements.

National Highway Route Offers Comfortable Travel

The first and most commonly used route connects Gaya to Ranchi through Dobhi, Barhi, Hazaribagh and Ramgarh. Covering approximately 225 kilometres, the route largely follows the National Highway network.

Due to better road conditions and relatively smooth traffic movement, this stretch is considered the most comfortable option for long-distance travel. Although toll charges apply at several points, the highway provides a steady driving experience.

Travellers on this route pass through forest areas and hilly terrain, with several roadside dhabas and rest stops available along the way.

Chatra-Tandwa Route Passes Through Coal Mining Areas

A second route connects Gaya to Ranchi via Dobhi, Chatra, Tandwa and Thakurgaon. This route covers nearly 210 kilometres, making it the shortest among the three options.

The route passes through forested regions and valleys while also offering views of coal mining operations in parts of Jharkhand. The mining landscape gives travellers a closer look at one of the region’s major industries.

However, commuters may experience occasional traffic congestion and narrower stretches on some sections of this route.

McCluskieganj Route Highlights Natural Beauty

The third route travels through Dobhi, Chatra, Balumath, McCluskieganj and Bijupara before reaching Ranchi. The total distance is approximately 222 kilometres.

This route is regarded by many travellers as the most scenic, passing through dense greenery and quieter roads. A major attraction along this stretch is McCluskieganj, often referred to as ‘Mini London’ due to its colonial-era English-style architecture and Anglo-Indian heritage.

The area’s calm surroundings and historic buildings attract visitors looking for a slower and more picturesque travel experience. Toll charges may also apply on parts of this route.

Travel Duration and Fare Details

The road journey from Gaya to Ranchi generally takes between five and five-and-a-half hours, depending on traffic conditions and the route selected.

Travellers opting for the shorter Chatra-Tandwa route may save modestly on fuel and travel time, while the National Highway route remains the preferred choice for comfort and ease of driving.

Private bus services between the two cities usually charge fares ranging from Rs 400 to Rs 500. Rail travel between Gaya and Ranchi is comparatively cheaper, with tickets available from around Rs 250.

However, for travellers seeking a full road trip experience across forests, hills and cultural landmarks, all three routes offer distinct journeys through Bihar and Jharkhand.
