Patna: The Bihar government has initiated the distribution of Bhagalpur’s GI-tagged Jardalu mangoes to Rashtrapati Bhavan, the Prime Minister’s Office, Union ministers, and visiting dignitaries from India and abroad as part of a state-level outreach programme.
The dispatch process has begun following packaging operations at a processing unit in Bihta, where officials are preparing consignments for official presentation.
Packaging and Inspection in Bihta
Industry Minister Shreyasi Singh visited the Bihta facility to review the packaging process and assess preparations for the distribution drive. Officials at the unit confirmed that sorting and packaging work is being carried out under supervision to maintain quality standards.
State Push for Agricultural Branding
The state government said the initiative aims to position Bihar’s agricultural produce more prominently in national and international markets. Jardalu mango, cultivated primarily in Bhagalpur, has been identified as a key product under this branding exercise.
Officials stated that the effort is not limited to ceremonial gifting but is also intended to strengthen market recognition for local produce.
National Recognition and Demand
The visibility of Jardalu mangoes increased after references made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ address, where he highlighted traditional agricultural products from Bihar, including makhana.
The state government believes this recognition has created a stronger platform for promoting GI-tagged produce such as Jardalu mangoes at a wider level.
GI Tag and Market Potential
Jardalu mango, a Jardalu Mango, carries a Geographical Indication tag and is known for its aroma and sweetness. Officials and stakeholders in the agricultural sector say demand for the fruit has been increasing in both domestic and select international markets.
They added that structured promotion through official channels could further improve branding prospects and benefit farmers in the region.
Focus on Farmer Income and Agri Branding
Agriculture stakeholders said that wider visibility for Jardalu mangoes could contribute to better price realisation for farmers in Bhagalpur and adjoining regions. The government views the initiative as part of a broader effort to strengthen Bihar’s agricultural identity and export potential.
