Patna: East Central Railway (ECR) has reported large-scale action against railway rule violators during May 2026 as part of special drives aimed at ensuring punctual train operations and improving the safety of women passengers. The Railway Protection Force (RPF) detained more than 4,200 people and recovered over Rs 13.8 lakh in fines under two separate enforcement campaigns.

The campaigns, named Operation Samay Palan and Operation Mahila Suraksha, were conducted across all divisions of the railway zone between May 1 and May 31. Railway officials said the drives were intended to discourage practices that disrupt train services and compromise passenger safety.

More than 1,100 booked for chain pulling

Under Operation Samay Palan, RPF personnel kept a close watch on incidents of unnecessary alarm chain pulling, which often leads to train delays and operational disruptions.

During the month, 1,175 people were detained for stopping trains without valid reasons. A total fine of Rs 5.02 lakh was recovered from the offenders, and cases were registered under Section 141 of the Railways Act.

Danapur Division recorded the highest number of violations with 602 people detained, followed by Samastipur Division with 239. Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay Division reported 147 cases, while Sonpur and Dhanbad divisions recorded 100 and 87 cases respectively.

Action against unauthorised travel in women’s coaches

As part of Operation Mahila Suraksha, RPF teams also carried out intensive checks in women’s coaches to ensure a safer travel environment for female passengers.

The campaign resulted in 3,061 male passengers being detained for travelling in women’s coaches without authorisation. The offenders were fined a combined Rs 8.79 lakh and action was taken against them under Section 162 of the Railways Act.

Danapur Division again recorded the highest number of cases with 1,442 male passengers detained. Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay Division reported 865 cases, followed by Dhanbad with 333, Samastipur with 290 and Sonpur with 131.

Railway appeals to passengers

East Central Railway has urged passengers to follow railway regulations, avoid unnecessary chain pulling and refrain from entering coaches reserved for women. Officials said adherence to these rules is essential for maintaining safe, punctual and hassle-free train operations across the railway network.
