Patna: The Bihar government has launched an accident insurance scheme for fishermen and fish farmers, providing coverage of up to Rs five lakh in the event of accidental death.
The scheme is aimed at strengthening social and economic security for people engaged in fisheries and allied activities, while encouraging the growth of the fisheries sector in the state.
Online applications for the scheme have been opened, and eligible beneficiaries have been asked to apply through the prescribed process.
Government to bear insurance premium
According to the Fisheries Department, fishermen and fish farmers are often exposed to risks while catching fish, maintaining ponds and carrying out other related work.
Under the scheme, the family or dependants of a beneficiary who dies in an accident will be entitled to financial assistance of up to Rs. five lakh.
Officials said the entire insurance premium will be borne by the government, ensuring that beneficiaries do not incur any additional financial burden.
Registration and documentation required
To avail of the scheme, applicants must first register with the Fisheries Department.
Beneficiaries will be required to submit an online application along with supporting documents, including an Aadhaar card, a copy of their bank passbook and relevant documents related to fisheries activities.
Verification process before approval
District Fisheries Officer Sanjay Kumar said applications will be scrutinised after submission to verify eligibility.
Field officials will also inspect the applicant’s pond and workplace as part of the verification process.
Following document verification and confirmation of eligibility, approved applicants will be enrolled under the scheme.
Aim to strengthen fisheries sector
The department said the initiative is expected to provide financial protection to fishermen and fish farmers while promoting fisheries-related activities across the state.
Officials expressed the view that improved social security measures could encourage greater participation in the sector and support its long-term development.
