Patna: The Patna Municipal Corporation is setting up two air-conditioned public lounges in the city aimed primarily at gig workers, including delivery personnel, courier staff, and two- and three-wheeler riders, to provide relief from extreme summer conditions.
The facilities are being developed at two busy locations — near Gandhi Maidan Gate No. 4 and Income Tax Golambar — and are also expected to be open to the general public.
Infrastructure Near Completion
Officials said the project has been executed under the direction of Urban Development and Housing Minister Nitish Mishra, following instructions issued last month.
The construction work is being carried out by Patna Smart City Limited, and the main structures at both sites have already been completed. Finishing work is currently in progress, with full readiness expected within the next four days.
Seating Capacity and Facilities
Each lounge will accommodate around 15 people at a time, providing a combined capacity of approximately 30 across both locations.
The facilities will include air-conditioning, seating arrangements, mobile charging points, and arrangements for cold drinking water.
Support Services for Gig Workers
To improve accessibility and convenience, members of the Jeevika self-help group, commonly known as “Jivika Didis,” will operate small stalls at the sites. These stalls will offer affordable refreshments, including traditional summer drinks such as buttermilk and raw mango cooler.
Opening Timeline and Expansion Plan
The lounges are scheduled to open for public use from June 15. Authorities have indicated that if the initiative receives a positive response, similar facilities may be expanded to other parts of the city in future phases.
