Patna: Passengers travelling between Patna, Saharsa and Purnia are likely to get a major boost in connectivity as the East Central Railway is preparing to introduce a new overnight train on the route.
According to Jyoti Prakash Mishra, Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), Samastipur Division, the proposed train will originate from Patliputra railway station and run via Saharsa to Purnia Court. The proposal follows a demand raised by local Members of Parliament during a recent Parliamentary Committee meeting, after which the Railways initiated the process to introduce the service.
Lack of Night Connectivity
At present, most trains connecting Patna with Saharsa and Purnia operate during the daytime, leaving passengers with limited options for overnight travel.
The Rajyarani Express serves the Patna–Saharsa route, while the Janaki Express operates between Jaynagar and Katihar. The Kosi Express connects Patna with Purnia Court. However, all these services primarily run during the day, forcing passengers travelling at night to rely on buses or break their journey.
Overnight Travel to Save Time
The proposed night train is expected to significantly reduce travel inconvenience on this long-distance route.
Passengers will be able to board the train at night, complete most of the journey while sleeping, and reach their destination early the next morning. This will help save an entire day that is otherwise spent travelling on daytime services.
The new service is also expected to provide a safer and more affordable alternative to overnight bus travel.
Relief for Patients and Students
The overnight train is likely to benefit patients and their attendants from the Kosi and Seemanchal regions who frequently travel to Patna for medical treatment. They will be able to leave at night and reach hospitals early in the morning without requiring additional accommodation.
Students travelling to Patna for higher education, coaching classes and competitive examinations are also expected to benefit. The new service will help them avoid hotel expenses while making travel more convenient and time-efficient.
Awaiting Operational Details
While the East Central Railway has confirmed that the service is being planned, the official launch date, train number, timetable and stoppage details are yet to be announced.
