Patna: A young engineer from Bihar’s Bhojpur district has secured a position as a Scientific Officer (Group ‘A’ Gazetted) at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), clearing the highly competitive recruitment process in his first attempt.
Abhay Kumar, a resident of Keshopur Bakri village under Udwantnagar police station, earned the selection after graduating from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Patna and spending nearly a year working at Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL).
IIT Patna Graduate
Abhay completed his B.Tech in Chemical Engineering from IIT Patna in 2025.
During his final year, he secured a campus placement with BPCL, one of India’s Maharatna public sector enterprises, where he worked before joining the BARC selection process.
According to his family, Abhay had aspired from a young age to contribute to India’s nuclear energy and scientific research programmes.
Strong GATE Performance
Abhay also performed strongly in the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE), one of India’s most competitive engineering examinations.
He secured an All India Rank (AIR) of 66 in GATE 2024 before improving his performance to AIR 14 in GATE 2025.
The rankings strengthened his academic profile ahead of the BARC recruitment process.
Family And Community Celebrate
Abhay is the son of Rita Kumari and Anand Kumar.
His selection has been welcomed by his family, residents of his native village and members of the IIT Patna community, who described the achievement as a source of pride for Bhojpur district and Bihar.
BARC is India’s premier nuclear research institution, with its Scientific Officer recruitment regarded as one of the country’s most competitive career pathways for engineering and science graduates.
