Patna: The East Central Railway (ECR) is preparing to modernise parking facilities at more than 100 railway stations, including Patna Junction, with the introduction of smart parking systems and multi-level parking infrastructure.
According to railway officials, the first phase of the project will cover 20–25 major stations by 2029, with the aim of improving parking management and reducing waiting times for passengers.
Online Booking And QR Code Entry
Under the proposed system, passengers will be able to reserve parking spaces through a mobile application before reaching the station.
After completing a digital payment, users will receive a QR code on their mobile phones. Scanning the code at the station entrance will automatically open the boom barrier, allowing vehicles to enter without requiring a printed parking ticket.
Officials said the system is expected to reduce queues at parking entrances and save passengers an estimated five to seven minutes.
Multi-Level Parking Planned
The Railways also plans to develop vertical parking facilities at stations where land availability is limited.
The proposed multi-level parking structures will include two- or three-storey facilities equipped with wide vehicle ramps and lifts to move vehicles between floors. Officials said the design is intended to maximise parking capacity within existing station premises.
Part Of Digital Modernisation
The initiative forms part of the Railways’ broader digital modernisation efforts aimed at improving passenger services.
Officials said the mobile application will allow passengers to book parking slots in advance, reducing dependence on cash transactions and streamlining entry and exit through digital verification.
Phased Implementation
According to the proposal, smart parking facilities will be introduced in phases across the East Central Railway zone, beginning with major stations before being expanded to other locations.
Patna Junction is among the stations identified for the planned upgrade, although railway authorities have not yet announced a detailed implementation schedule for individual stations
