Patna: Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) has ordered a series of measures to improve drainage and sanitation around Patna Junction after the Municipal Commissioner inspected several flood-prone commercial areas on Sunday.
The inspection covered New Market, Mandiri Sump House, Khetan Market and Hathua Market, where officials reviewed drainage arrangements, interacted with shopkeepers and residents, and assessed preparedness for the ongoing monsoon.
Shopkeepers Highlight Drainage Challenges
During the inspection of New Market, traders told the Municipal Commissioner that the market road is around 2.5 feet lower than the adjoining main road, slowing the drainage of rainwater during heavy showers.
In response, the Municipal Commissioner directed officials to install an additional 10 HP pump in Lassi Gali. He also ordered the replacement of the existing 10 HP pump in Chandrakala Gali with a 26 HP pump to increase pumping capacity.
Officials were further instructed to coordinate with the Road Construction Department to create a temporary earthen drain as an alternative channel for rainwater.
PMC also directed the deployment of additional sanitation workers in three shifts to speed up cleaning operations and water drainage.
Focus On Continuous Operation Of Sump House
At the Mandiri Sump House, the Municipal Commissioner instructed officials to ensure uninterrupted operation of the pumping station throughout the monsoon.
He directed staff to continuously monitor water levels and remain prepared to respond based on weather forecasts.
Special Teams For Low-Lying Markets
The Municipal Commissioner also visited Hathua Market and Khetan Market, where he spoke with traders about the challenges posed by waterlogging during the rainy season.
He instructed the Executive Officer of Bankipur zone to ensure daily fogging and anti-larval spraying in the area to minimise public health risks.
PMC also ordered the temporary deployment of a dedicated team to facilitate rapid drainage whenever heavy rainfall causes water accumulation.
Area Prone To Waterlogging
According to PMC officials, the commercial area around Patna Junction is relatively low-lying and remains vulnerable to waterlogging during the monsoon.
To address the problem, the civic body has already positioned three to four Super Sucker machines in the locality for quick removal of accumulated rainwater.
Executive officers from the Pataliputra, Nutan Rajdhani and Bankipur zones, along with engineering officials, accompanied the Municipal Commissioner during the inspection.
