Patna: Dr Setu Sinha, Additional Professor in the Department of Community Medicine and Deputy Medical Superintendent at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS), Patna, has been conferred the Indian Medical Association (IMA) Community Service Award in recognition of his contributions to public health, community medicine, medical education and healthcare services.
The award was presented during the National Doctors’ Day 2026 celebrations at a national ceremony organised by the Indian Medical Association in New Delhi.
The honour was presented by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in the presence of Rajya Sabha MP Mayankbhai J. Nayak, IMA National President Dr Anil Nayak, IMA Honorary Secretary General Dr Sarbari Dutta, and Past IMA National President Dr Sahajanand Prasad Singh.
Recognition For Public Health Contributions
The IMA Community Service Award is presented annually to medical professionals who have made significant contributions to improving community health and advancing the medical profession through public service.
Dr Sinha, a Harvard alumnus, has worked extensively in preventive and community medicine, immunisation, health systems strengthening, medical education and public health policy.
His work has included collaborations with national and international organisations, including the World Health Organization (WHO), as well as initiatives aimed at strengthening healthcare delivery and promoting equitable access to quality healthcare.
‘An Honour That Brings Greater Responsibility’
Reacting to the recognition, Dr Sinha said doctors do not serve society with the expectation of receiving awards, but such honours motivate them to continue working with greater commitment.
He said the greatest reward for any medical professional is the opportunity to save lives, reduce suffering and earn the trust of patients and communities.
Dr Sinha added that the award also brings a greater responsibility to uphold the principles of compassionate, ethical and dignified healthcare.
Several Bihar Doctors Recognised
Dr Sinha also noted that several doctors from Bihar were honoured at the same ceremony.
They included Padma Bhushan Dr C. P. Thakur, who received the Lifetime Achievement Award; Dr Ashutosh Sharan, President of the IMA Bihar State Branch, who received the Eminent Doctor Award; Dr Jasbir Sharan, honoured with the Academic Excellence Award; and Dr Santosh Kumar Singh, who received the Aao Gaon Chalen Award.
