Patna: Bihar’s longest bridge over the Kosi River is in its final phase of construction, with officials reporting that nearly 96.6 per cent of the project has been completed. Once operational, the bridge is expected to reduce the road distance between Bhagalpur and Madhepura and Saharsa by around 60 kilometres, while improving connectivity across north-eastern Bihar and towards Nepal.
According to project officials, the Rs 996.30 crore bridge-cum-road project covers approximately 28.918 kilometres, including a 6.94-kilometre four-lane bridge at Phulaut in Madhepura district.
Project Nears Final Stage
The project connects National Highway 31 (NH-31) with National Highway 106 (NH-106), creating a new transport corridor across the Kosi River.
Officials said road construction on the Supaul side has already been completed, while work on the main bridge is in its final phase.
Out of the bridge’s 128 spans, 126 have been completed, with construction now focused on the remaining span and finishing work.
What Will Change for Travellers?
Once opened to traffic, the bridge is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Bhagalpur and several districts in the Kosi region.
According to the project authorities, the road distance between Bhagalpur, Madhepura and Saharsa will be shortened by around 60 kilometres.
The improved route is also expected to benefit travellers heading towards Nepal, providing a more direct road connection through north-eastern Bihar.
Construction Timeline
The bridge is being constructed by Afcons Infrastructure Limited.
The project was originally targeted for completion by June 2024, but construction timelines were affected by various factors. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways subsequently extended the completion deadline to February 28, 2027.
According to officials, nearly all major civil works have now been completed, and most project payments have also been released.
Approach Roads Also Near Completion
Construction is continuing simultaneously on the remaining bridge section and the approach roads.
Officials said work on the Wet Mix Macadam (WMM), Dense Bituminous Macadam (DBM) and final bituminous surfacing is progressing towards completion.
These works are expected to prepare the corridor for traffic once the remaining structural work is finished.
Expected Impact
According to the government, the project is expected to improve connectivity between districts separated by the Kosi River while supporting trade, tourism and access to education and healthcare.
Officials also believe the corridor will strengthen transport links with Nepal by providing a more efficient route for passenger and commercial traffic.
What’s Next?
With more than 96 per cent of the project completed, authorities are focusing on finishing the final bridge span and approach roads. If construction progresses as planned, the bridge is expected to be opened to traffic within the coming months, subject to the completion of remaining works and necessary approvals.
