Muzaffarpur: Krishna Murari, son of Bihar Tourism Minister and BJP leader Kedar Prasad Gupta, allegedly received a WhatsApp message demanding Rs 50 lakh in extortion in the name of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. The sender also threatened to kill him if the money was not paid.
Murari has lodged an FIR at Sadar police station in connection with the alleged extortion attempt. Police are investigating the case using digital evidence and the mobile number from which the message was sent.
According to the complaint, Murari received the WhatsApp message at around 10.20 pm on July 24. The sender allegedly claimed to be a member of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang based in Mumbai and demanded Rs 50 lakh. The message also allegedly warned Murari of serious consequences if he failed to comply with the demand.
Murari informed the police soon after receiving the message.
During the investigation, police found that three other BJP leaders in the district had allegedly received extortion demands in the name of the Bishnoi gang between July 21 and 24.
Muzaffarpur Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kantesh Kumar Mishra said FIRs have been registered in all three cases and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to investigate them.
“We are investigating the cases and arrests will be made soon,” the SSP said.
Police are examining the digital trail, mobile numbers and other available evidence to identify the persons behind the threats. The use of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang’s name in the alleged extortion attempts is also being investigated.
