Patna: The Bihar government has directed all urban local bodies to fast-track development projects, including the construction of “signature roads” and organised night markets, as part of a wider plan to modernise cities and improve civic infrastructure.
Urban Development and Housing Minister Nitish Mishra said every municipal corporation, municipal council and town panchayat has been asked to identify and implement projects aligned with both immediate and long-term development goals.
October 2026 Deadline For Priority Projects
The department has instructed urban local bodies to select projects that can be completed by October 2026.
Officials have been asked to ensure timely selection of schemes, obtain administrative approvals without delay and complete implementation within the prescribed timeline so that residents begin receiving the benefits at the earliest.
Signature Roads Planned For Every City
As part of the initiative, every urban local body will develop a one to two-kilometre “signature road” designed to become a landmark for the city.
According to Mishra, the roads will be widened and upgraded with improved lighting, enhanced greenery and better public amenities. He said the objective is not only to improve road infrastructure but also to transform the overall urban landscape.
Focus On Long-Term Urban Growth
Alongside short-term projects, the government has asked urban bodies to prepare larger development plans for completion by December 2028.
Projects that benefit the largest number of residents will receive priority, the minister said.
The department also plans to establish organised night markets in cities where they are considered necessary, with the aim of boosting local businesses while improving public spaces.
Vision For Modern Cities
Mishra said the government aims to make Bihar’s cities cleaner, more organised and more liveable through time-bound implementation of urban development schemes.
He said initiatives such as signature roads and upgraded public infrastructure would strengthen urban amenities, improve residents’ quality of life and help establish Bihar’s cities as models of planned urban development.
