Patna: Police have arrested the driver of Dehri Nagar Parishad executive officer Vimal Kumar in connection with his killing, with senior officers saying the accused confessed during interrogation and described how he allegedly carried out the crime.
Magadh range inspector general Vikas Vaibhav said the accused, Mithilesh Kumar, admitted attacking the civic officer with a tyre iron kept in the official vehicle before attempting to portray the incident as an attack by unidentified assailants.
Police Account Of The Killing
According to police, the driver told investigators he had been under mental stress due to long working hours and frequent reprimands from the executive officer.
Police said the accused claimed he had objected to travelling from Dehri to Patna late in the evening on the day of the incident. He also alleged that he had not eaten before the journey and was reprimanded when asked to accompany the officer.
The alleged attack took place near Lakh Dihra village on the Barun–Daudnagar–Patna canal road in Aurangabad district after the vehicle was stopped. Police said the driver told investigators he struck Kumar on the head multiple times with the tyre iron, causing fatal injuries.
Alleged Attempt To Mislead Investigation
Investigators said the accused later overturned the vehicle by the roadside in an alleged attempt to make the incident appear accidental.
When that plan failed, police alleged, he fabricated a story claiming unidentified assailants on an Apache motorcycle had attacked the officer. He subsequently informed the victim’s family and officials about Kumar’s death.
Investigation
Vikas Vaibhav said investigators became suspicious after the driver’s statements changed during questioning. Police said he initially claimed two motorcycles were involved before altering his account to one motorcycle, prompting further interrogation that allegedly led to the confession.
The investigation is continuing, and police said they are gathering additional evidence to corroborate the accused’s statement.
