Patna: Bihar is set to redevelop Patna’s Moinul Haque Stadium into a modern international cricket facility, with Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary saying the project will be funded by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
The proposed redevelopment is expected to cost around Rs 500 crore, according to the Chief Minister. The Bihar government had held discussions with the BCCI over the project, and Choudhary said the board has accepted the state’s request to undertake the construction.
40,000-Seat Stadium Planned
According to the plans outlined by the Chief Minister, the cricket complex will be developed across approximately 25 to 30 acres.
The main stadium is expected to have a seating capacity of around 40,000 spectators. The complex will also include two cricket grounds, potentially providing additional facilities for matches and training.
Modern Facilities For Players
The proposed stadium will include facilities aimed at supporting both professional matches and player development.
These are expected to include modern dressing rooms, a gymnasium, swimming pool and spa facilities. Between nine and 16 cricket pitches are also planned across the complex for training and practice.
Could Patna Host Major Cricket Events?
The redevelopment could give Patna a larger venue for domestic and international cricket, subject to the stadium meeting the required standards and receiving the necessary approvals.
A modern 40,000-seat facility could also strengthen Bihar’s ability to host major cricket tournaments and potentially attract high-profile fixtures in the future.
However, specific details regarding international matches or IPL fixtures will depend on the stadium’s completion, accreditation and scheduling decisions by the relevant cricket authorities.
When Could The Stadium Be Ready?
A construction timeline of around three years has been indicated for the redevelopment.
If the project progresses according to the proposed schedule, the revamped Moinul Haque Stadium could be ready around 2029.
The redevelopment would give Patna another major sporting facility alongside the international cricket stadium in Rajgir and could provide improved infrastructure for the state’s emerging cricketers.
