Patna: Patna’s road infrastructure is undergoing a major transformation as the city’s network of elevated roads and flyovers continues to expand. The Meethapur-Mahuli elevated corridor is emerging as an important addition, with the Meethapur-Sipara section already completed.
Once the corridor becomes fully operational, commuters could travel from Meethapur to Punpun in around 10 to 15 minutes, significantly improving connectivity between Patna and southern Bihar.
11.67-Km Corridor to Connect Meethapur with Punpun
The four-lane elevated corridor stretches from Meethapur through Sipara and Mahuli to Punpun. The overall corridor is approximately 11.67 km long and has been developed at an estimated cost of ₹1,467.72 crore.
The project is expected to provide smoother connectivity to areas towards Gaya, Jehanabad and Aurangabad while helping reduce congestion on several busy roads within Patna.
The Meethapur-Mahuli section, extending from the Meethapur education hub to Ramgovind Singh Mahuli Halt, is around 8.86 km long and was constructed at a cost of approximately ₹1,030.59 crore.
Vehicles Can Travel at Up to 60 Kmph
The elevated corridor has two lanes in each direction, with a maximum permitted speed of 60 kmph. The section between Mahuli Halt and Punpun Laxman Jhula is around 2.20 km long.
The corridor is expected to provide a faster route for commuters travelling between Patna and southern Bihar, particularly during peak traffic hours.
Better Connectivity to Gaya and Jehanabad
The project is not limited to improving access to Punpun. It is also expected to facilitate traffic moving towards Gaya, Jehanabad and Aurangabad.
By diverting a portion of long-distance traffic onto the elevated corridor, the project could reduce pressure on Patna’s internal roads and make journeys towards south Bihar more convenient.
UHPFRC Technology Used for the First Time in Bihar
One of the notable features of the Meethapur-Mahuli elevated corridor is the use of Ultra High Performance Fibre Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC), reportedly being used for the first time in Bihar for this type of infrastructure.
The technology has enabled the construction of spans of around 64 metres. The alignment of the elevated corridor has also been kept parallel to the railway tracks.
Sound Barriers and Street Lighting Added
The elevated road has safety barriers on both sides, along with sound barriers. Street lighting, expansion joints and road-marking work have also been incorporated to improve safety and convenience for commuters, including those travelling at night.
Focus Now Shifts to Danapur-Bihta Elevated Corridor
After the Meethapur-Mahuli corridor, attention is also focused on the proposed Danapur-Bihta elevated corridor. The project is expected to stretch for around 25 km and more than half of the construction work has reportedly been completed.
The corridor will connect Danapur Railway Station with Bihta and Koilwar and is targeted for completion by June 2027.
389 Piers Planned for Danapur-Bihta Corridor
The Danapur-Bihta elevated corridor is being constructed on 389 piers. Several major structures, including a railway overbridge and a double-decker bridge, are planned near Danapur.
Ramps are also being constructed at Danapur station, Neuraganj and between Bihta Airport and Koilwar. The Danapur ramp is expected to reach a height of around 25 metres.
The project has an estimated cost of approximately ₹1,969 crore.
AIIMS, IIT and NIT Connectivity Expected to Improve
Once the Danapur-Bihta corridor is completed, connectivity across western Patna is expected to improve significantly. Access to major institutions such as AIIMS, IIT and NIT could become easier.
The corridor is also expected to provide better connectivity for travellers heading towards Uttar Pradesh and Delhi.
With multiple elevated roads and flyovers either operational or under construction, Patna’s road network is gradually taking shape as a larger elevated transport system aimed at reducing congestion and improving travel times across the city and beyond.
