Patna: Dimpy Garg assumed charge as the new General Manager of East Central Railway (ECR) on Tuesday. Before taking up the assignment, he served as Principal Chief Mechanical Engineer of Northern Railway in New Delhi.
A 1990-batch officer of the Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineers (IRSME), Garg entered the railway service through the Special Class Railway Apprenticeship (SCRA) scheme and was the topper and a gold medallist of his batch.
Over three decades of railway experience
Garg has more than 32 years of experience spanning infrastructure development, rolling stock management, railway operations, safety, planning and policy.
He began his career as AME/Diesel at Abu Road on the erstwhile Western Railway and subsequently held several positions in Northern Railway and the Railway Board.
His assignments have included Senior Divisional Mechanical Engineer, Additional Divisional Railway Manager and Divisional Railway Manager of the Delhi Division of Northern Railway. He has also served as Principal Chief Safety Officer and Principal Chief Mechanical Engineer at Northern Railway headquarters.
At the organisational level, Garg served as Additional General Manager at RVNL and as Executive Director (Coaching) and Executive Director (Safety) at the Railway Board.
Recognised for railway engineering and project execution
Garg has received several awards for his contributions to railway engineering and project execution.
In 2001, while serving as CDO/Mumbai Central, he received the General Manager’s Award for his contribution to upgrading the Mumbai Central Coaching Depot and helping it become the first coaching depot in Indian Railways to achieve ISO 9002 certification.
In 2007, while serving as Director (Planning/ME) at the Railway Board, he received an award from the Railway Minister for his contribution to assessing rolling stock requirements and formulating annual plans.
International training and academic background
Garg holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering from IRIMEE, Jamalpur. He also pursued higher education in mechanical engineering through the Institution of Engineers (India), Kolkata, and the Engineering Council, London.
His professional training includes expertise in LHB coach maintenance in Germany and Switzerland. He also completed a course on Wheel-Rail Interaction organised by the International Heavy Haul Association in Sweden.
In addition, he participated in the Frontiers in Infrastructure Finance course conducted by IIM Ahmedabad and the World Bank.
With his extensive experience in mechanical engineering, railway operations and administration, Garg’s appointment is expected to bring further focus to operational efficiency, safety and infrastructure development across East Central Railway.
