Patna: Bihar received Rs 13,870 crore in Goods and Services Tax (GST) revenue after settlement between April and August of the current financial year, marking an 8% increase from the Rs 12,883 crore received during the corresponding period last year.
The figures indicate higher GST receipts for the state during the first five months of 2026-27, according to the Commercial Taxes Department.
August GST Receipts Rise After Settlement
Bihar received Rs 2,684 crore in GST revenue after settlement in August. Before settlement, the state’s GST receipt stood at Rs 907 crore.
The higher post-settlement figure reflects the allocation of the state’s share through the GST settlement process. The increase has encouraged the Commercial Taxes Department, according to the information provided.
Consumption And Tax Compliance Support Growth
The rise in GST receipts has been attributed to several factors, including higher consumption and the expansion of the tax base.
Under the GST 2.0 reforms, lower tax rates on household goods, clothing and essential medicines have supported purchasing activity among rural and middle-class consumers, according to the department.
The digitisation of small traders and businesses has also brought more economic activity into the formal tax system.
Authorities have additionally strengthened tax compliance through data analytics and checks on e-way bills. These measures are aimed at detecting tax evasion and reducing revenue leakage.
Festive Season May Boost Collections
The upcoming festive season is also expected to support consumption and state GST receipts.
With Navratri and Dussehra scheduled in October, increased spending during the festive period could provide further support to GST collections, according to the department.
