Patna: Bihar is set to get its second modern zoo after Patna, with a state-of-the-art wildlife facility proposed in Bodh Gaya at an estimated cost of Rs 200 crore. Spread across around 110 acres, the zoo is planned to house more than 50 species of animals and birds.
The project is targeted for completion by 2028. Once operational, it is expected to add another major attraction to Bodh Gaya, which draws around 40 lakh domestic and international tourists every year.
Forest Department Submits Proposal to CZA
The Bihar Forest Department has submitted a detailed proposal for the zoo to the Central Zoo Authority (CZA).
The CZA has sought clarifications on 15 points related to the project. These include technical details such as the size and design of enclosures for large animals, species-specific enclosure requirements and proposed parking facilities.
The Forest Department is expected to submit its response by September 10. If the proposal meets the prescribed standards, the project could receive a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the CZA within the next two months.
Zoo to Spread Across 110 Acres
The proposed complex will have dedicated enclosures for animals and birds across approximately 110 acres.
Safety and visitor experience are being given importance in the design. Strong glass barriers are planned in front of animal enclosures, allowing visitors to observe wildlife from close range while maintaining a safe distance.
Each enclosure will also feature smart digital information displays. Visitors will be able to access information about the animals and birds in both Hindi and English.
More Than 50 Wildlife Species Planned
The zoo is expected to house more than 50 species, covering a wide variety of wildlife.
The proposed list includes lions, tigers, giraffes, rhinoceroses, bears, deer, leopards, gharials, gaurs and peacocks, among other animals and birds.
The project is also expected to strengthen wildlife and nature tourism in Bodh Gaya, giving tourists another attraction alongside the city’s major Buddhist heritage sites.
Tourist-Friendly Facilities Planned
The proposed zoo will include a range of facilities aimed at making the visitor experience more convenient.
- Online and QR-code-based ticketing
- Separate entry and exit gates
- Parking facilities for cars, buses, bikes and e-rickshaws
- E-rickshaw services within the zoo premises
- Water coolers and water ATMs
- Separate toilets for men and women
- Benches, shelters and designated rest areas
- Food facilities for visitors
- Nature play areas and parks for children
- Opportunities to observe wildlife-related activities
- Hindi and English information about every animal and bird
Bodh Gaya Set for a New Tourism Attraction
If the project receives the required approvals and progresses according to schedule, the new zoo could become an important addition to Bodh Gaya’s tourism infrastructure.
With its large area, diverse wildlife collection and technology-based visitor facilities, the proposed zoo is expected to offer tourists a modern wildlife experience while adding another dimension to Bihar’s growing nature and tourism infrastructure.
