Patna: A new rail link between Ayodhya and Janakpur could soon make it easier for devotees to visit two of the most important religious destinations associated with the Ramayana. Preparations are underway to introduce a weekly train service between the two cities under the Ramayana Circuit.
If the plan progresses as scheduled, the service could receive the green light before Vivah Panchami, giving pilgrims a direct rail connection between Ayodhya and Janakpur through several important locations in Bihar.
Senior Officials Hold Meeting at Jayanagar
A meeting of senior officials from India and Nepal was held at Jayanagar railway station to discuss the proposed train service.
Officials from the railways, administration, security and customs departments discussed operational arrangements, passenger safety and procedures related to cross-border travel.
The meeting also focused on ensuring smooth coordination between the two countries before the proposed service begins.
Joint Team Inspects Jayanagar-Janakpur Rail Route
Following the meeting, a joint team from India and Nepal conducted a physical inspection of the Jayanagar-Janakpur-Kurtha rail section.
The team examined the railway tracks, signalling system, level crossings, stations and security arrangements. The inspection report will be submitted to the concerned ministries for further consideration.
Proposed Train Route Through Bihar
The proposed Ayodhya-Janakpur train is expected to operate through the following route:
- Ayodhya Dham
- Gorakhpur
- Narkatiaganj Junction
- Raxaul
- Sitamarhi Junction
- Darbhanga
- Jayanagar
- Janakpur
The route would allow pilgrims to travel from Ayodhya through several major cities and railway stations in Bihar before reaching Janakpur, which holds deep religious significance as the birthplace of Mata Sita.
AC and Sleeper Coaches Planned
The proposed weekly service is expected to include AC and sleeper-class coaches to make the long-distance journey more comfortable for passengers.
Authorities are also working on arrangements for security checks and customs procedures at the India-Nepal border. The formal agreement and other necessary approvals between the two countries are also being processed.
Bihar Pilgrims Could Benefit the Most
The proposed train service could significantly benefit people from Bihar, as several major stations in the state are included in the proposed route.
Direct connectivity would make it easier for devotees from different parts of Bihar to travel to both Ayodhya and Janakpur for pilgrimage.
The service could also provide a boost to religious tourism in Bihar and the border regions, while strengthening cultural and religious links between India and Nepal. If the required approvals are completed on time, the train could become a major addition to the Ramayana Circuit ahead of Vivah Panchami.
