Bihar NH-327 Four-Lane Project To Strengthen Connectivity With West Bengal And Northeast

Patna: Road connectivity between Bihar’s Seemanchal region, West Bengal and the Northeast is set to improve with the four-laning of a 31.02-km stretch of NH-327 in West Bengal. The project, approved at a cost of Rs 2,077.18 crore, is expected to benefit areas including Bihar’s Kishanganj and Araria districts.

Union minister Nitin Gadkari has approved the project, which will connect Galgalia, Panitanki, Kharibari and Bagdogra in West Bengal’s Darjeeling district.

Although the construction is located in West Bengal, the upgraded highway is expected to strengthen road connectivity for Bihar’s border districts and provide smoother access towards Siliguri and Bagdogra.

Elephant Underpasses And Major Bridges Planned

The project includes several major infrastructure components aimed at improving road capacity and safety.

The four-lane corridor will have five elephant underpasses, three major bridges and one railway overbridge. Service roads will also be developed along both sides of the highway.

The elephant underpasses are planned to facilitate the safe movement of wildlife and reduce the interaction between elephants and highway traffic.

Four-Laning Expected To Ease Congestion

The route has seen increased traffic, while the stretch beyond Galgalia towards West Bengal remains largely two-lane. This creates congestion around areas such as Panitanki and Kharibari.

Once upgraded, the road will have greater traffic-handling capacity and is expected to make movement towards Siliguri and Bagdogra more convenient.

For commuters and commercial vehicles travelling between Bihar and West Bengal, the improved road could provide a more efficient route towards the Siliguri region.

Strategic Importance Near International Borders

The project also has strategic significance because the region lies close to the Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh borders.

The Siliguri Corridor, commonly known as the ‘Chicken Neck’, is also located in this wider region. A stronger highway network could improve connectivity for commercial traffic and local residents while strengthening road access in the strategically important border area.

Land Acquisition Process Underway

Land acquisition for the project has already begun. A notification related to the acquisition was published in the Gazette of India on August 7, 2026.

The notification covers the NH-327 stretch from kilometre 0 to 31.462. Several villages in the Naxalbari, Phansidewa and Kharibari areas are included in the acquisition process.

Better Connectivity For Bihar’s Seemanchal Region

For Bihar, the project is particularly relevant because Araria and Kishanganj have important road links towards West Bengal and the Siliguri-Bagdogra region.

The four-laning of NH-327 is expected to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion and make journeys towards northern West Bengal and the Northeast more convenient.

The upgraded corridor could also support movement of commercial vehicles and facilitate trade between Seemanchal, West Bengal and the wider northeastern region.

The NH-327 project is therefore expected to strengthen an important road link connecting Bihar with West Bengal while improving access to the strategically significant Siliguri region.
