Banka: Two girls, both reported to be around 17, have reportedly married each other in Banka district of Bihar, prompting police to intervene and begin counselling.
According to police, the teenagers live in the same village and their homes are close to each other. They had reportedly been in a relationship for about a year before the incident.
The matter came to the attention of their families and villagers soon after the reported marriage. Police subsequently brought both teenagers to Belhar police station, where they were questioned along with their guardians.
Reported Wedding At Home
According to the account given to police, one of the teenagers took the other girl from her home on Sunday and brought her to her own house. The two then performed wedding rituals, during which one girl applied sindoor to the other’s forehead.
The teenager who dresses in trousers and shirts reportedly told police and family members that she identified herself as a boy and wanted to keep her partner with her as her wife.
She reportedly works as a labourer with masons and also does tent-decoration work in the village. According to the account, she would spend her earnings on her partner’s needs and wishes.
Earlier Feelings For Girlfriend’s Sister
The teenager also reportedly told police that she had previously wanted to marry her girlfriend’s older sister. She later developed a relationship with the younger girl, with whom she had been together for about a year.
At the police station, both teenagers reportedly said they wanted to live together. Their guardians were also questioned as police assessed the circumstances surrounding the reported marriage.
Police Begin Counselling
Station House Officer Gautam Kumar Sharma said both teenagers are minors and that efforts are being made to counsel them.
The case comes against the legal backdrop that both teenagers are under 18. Police are therefore handling the matter with their status as minors in consideration.
