Patna: Bihar Police Headquarters has decided to establish a Child Help Desk or Child Corner in every police station across the state by October 2, 2026. The initiative has been taken by the Weak Sections wing of the Crime Investigation Department to provide children with a safer and more child-friendly environment when they approach police stations.
The move is being implemented in accordance with the Bihar Police Act and directions of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR). The objective is to ensure that cases involving children are handled with greater sensitivity and that children and their families have access to a designated point for assistance.
Separate Space Away From Lock-Up
The Child Help Desk or Child Corner will be established at a visible and easily accessible location within the police station premises. The designated area will be kept separate from the regular lock-up, providing children with a more appropriate environment for interaction with police personnel.
The facility will function under the leadership of the Child Welfare Police Officer (CWPO). The name, designation and mobile number of the CWPO and the concerned District Child Protection Officer (DCPO) will be prominently displayed at the centre so that children and their guardians can contact the designated officials when required.
Women Police Personnel To Assist Girls
The new arrangement will also include the deployment of suitable women police personnel to interact with and assist girls dealing with issues that require police intervention.
The provision is intended to make communication easier for children and ensure that cases involving girls receive appropriate support within the police station environment.
Complaints To Be Addressed Promptly
Police stations will be required to take prompt action on complaints and requests for assistance received from children and their guardians. The contact numbers displayed at the Child Help Desks are expected to remain active so that people can reach the designated officials when assistance is required.
Complaints will also be handled within the prescribed timeframe, with appropriate records maintained to track their disposal.
Senior Officers To Monitor Implementation
The functioning of the Child Help Desks will be monitored regularly by senior district police officials. The monitoring mechanism will include the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Special Juvenile Police Unit (SJPU) in-charge, and other senior district-level officers.
The aim is to ensure that the arrangements remain functional and that police personnel follow child-sensitive procedures while dealing with children and their families.
October 2 Deadline For All Police Stations
All police stations in Bihar have been directed to establish the Child Help Desk or Child Corner by October 2, 2026, coinciding with Gandhi Jayanti.
District authorities will have to submit compliance reports to the Weak Sections, Crime Investigation Department, Bihar, by October 5, 2026. The initiative is intended to establish a dedicated and accessible mechanism within police stations for children seeking protection, assistance or intervention.
