Patna: Automatic CCTV cameras and special enforcement drives by the traffic police are keeping a close watch on traffic violations across Patna. In the first eight months of 2026, from January to August, motorists were fined a total of Rs 34.01 crore for violating traffic rules.
According to traffic enforcement data, zebra crossing violations accounted for the largest share of the total fines, followed by riding two-wheelers without helmets.
Zebra crossing violations account for nearly half of total fines
Of the total Rs 34.01 crore imposed in fines, Rs 16.81 crore, or 49.44%, was related to zebra crossing violations.
The second-largest category was riding a two-wheeler without a helmet. Such violations accounted for Rs 13.78 crore, or 40.52% of the total fines.
Together, zebra crossing and helmet violations accounted for around 90% of the total fines imposed during the eight-month period.
Other major violations included speeding by light vehicles, wrong-side driving by two-wheelers, traffic signal violations, triple riding and using mobile phones while driving.
March recorded the highest fines
Among the months for which figures are available, March recorded the highest amount of fines at Rs 8.36 crore.
The monthly figures were Rs 3.70 crore in January, Rs 4.04 crore in February, Rs 8.36 crore in March, Rs 6.21 crore in April, Rs 4.02 crore in May, Rs 1.83 crore in July and Rs 5.82 crore in August.
The data provided does not include a separate figure for June.
Other major traffic violations
Apart from zebra crossing and helmet violations, Rs 85 lakh was imposed for speeding by light vehicles, accounting for 2.50% of the total fines.
Wrong-side driving by two-wheelers resulted in fines of Rs 79 lakh, or 2.33% of the total.
Among other violations, breaking traffic signals by cars and cabs attracted Rs 27.87 lakh in fines. Triple riding on motorcycles resulted in Rs 17.73 lakh, while using a mobile phone while driving led to fines of Rs 16.98 lakh.
Driving a car without a seat belt resulted in Rs 15.70 lakh in fines, while violations related to the absence of an insurance certificate accounted for Rs 10.83 lakh.
Wrong-side driving by heavy vehicles resulted in another Rs 10.81 lakh in fines.
The enforcement figures show that violations at intersections, particularly zebra crossing violations, along with helmet-related offences, account for a significant share of traffic enforcement in Patna.
