Folk Music Legend Sharda Sinha Passes Away After Health Struggles

Folk Singer Sharda Sinha in Critical Condition at AIIMS, Fans Hold Prayers for Her Recovery

New Delhi: Renowned folk singer Sharda Sinha, celebrated for her contributions to Chhath music, has passed away at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi. She was 72 years old and had been battling serious health issues for the past few weeks.

Sinha was admitted to AIIMS on October 26 after her condition deteriorated, requiring intensive care in the oncology ward. After showing slight improvement, she was moved to a private ward on November 3. However, her health took a turn for the worse on the evening of November 4, when her oxygen levels dropped significantly, leading to her placement on a ventilator. Despite medical efforts, she succumbed to her ailments.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached out to Sinha’s son, Anshuman Sinha, on Tuesday to inquire about his mother’s health. Union Minister Giriraj Singh also visited AIIMS today to meet with the family and medical staff, expressing his condolences and support. Earlier, Union Minister Chirag Paswan had visited the hospital to offer his sympathies.

Anshuman Sinha, speaking live on YouTube on Monday, had appealed to the public for prayers for his mother, stating, “My mother is on a ventilator. She needs prayers and blessings a lot. Now all of you keep praying. My mother has gone into a big battle. It is very difficult to win this battle. Pray that she can fight and come out.”

Sinha was well-known for her soulful renditions of traditional Chhath songs, a genre that resonates deeply with the cultural fabric of Bihar. Just before her hospitalization, she released a new song titled “Dukhva Mitaai Chhathi Maiya,” which premiered on her official YouTube channel. The song’s lyrics express hope and reverence for the Chhath festival, a significant occasion for many devotees.

Sinha’s passing comes just weeks after the death of her husband, Brajkishore Sinha, who succumbed to a brain hemorrhage on September 22. Her legacy, particularly in the realm of Chhath songs, has left an indelible mark on the hearts of her fans and followers.
