Patna: Ten faculty members of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Patna have been included in the 2026 list of the world’s top 2% scientists, bringing international recognition to the institute’s research work across multiple disciplines.

Compiled by Stanford University researchers in collaboration with Elsevier, the list evaluates scientific contributions using data from Elsevier’s Scopus database and established research-impact indicators.

The selected researchers represent physics, mechanical engineering, mathematics, computer science and engineering, electrical engineering, and humanities and social sciences.

Who Are The 10 IIT Patna Scientists?

The list includes former IIT Patna director Prof. T.N. Singh and nine other faculty members from different departments.

The selected scientists are:

  • – Prof. T.N. Singh – Former Director, IIT Patna
  • – Prof. Avadhendra Kumar Thakur – Dean of Administration and Professor, Department of Physics
  • – Prof. Naveen Kumar Nishchal – Head, Department of Physics
  • – Dr. Surajit Kumar Paul – Associate Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering
  • – Dr. Anirban Bhattacharya – Head, Department of Mechanical Engineering
  • – Dr. Richa Chaudhary – Associate Professor, Department of Humanities and Social Sciences

  • – Dr. Ranjan Kumar Behera – Associate Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering

How Is The List Compiled?

The world’s top 2% scientists list draws on publication and citation data from Scopus to assess researchers’ scientific contributions and research impact.

According to the description of the methodology provided in the source material, the assessment considers both annual research performance and career-long impact. Researchers are classified across 22 major scientific fields and 174 sub-fields.

The list is intended to provide a standardised assessment of research impact across disciplines. Inclusion reflects performance against the methodology’s selected indicators and does not, by itself, constitute a universal ranking of scientific merit.

Recognition For IIT Patna’s Research

The inclusion of 10 faculty members highlights research activity at IIT Patna across science, technology, engineering and the social sciences.

The institute, under the leadership of its Director, Prof. Amit Patra, has congratulated the selected researchers. According to the information provided by the institute, the achievement reflects its continued focus on research, innovation and academic development.
