Patna : The Bihar Renewable Energy Development Agency (BREDA) has stepped up preparations to install rooftop solar power plants on government buildings across the state, with a target of achieving 500 megawatts (MW) of capacity by 2029-30.
The initiative is part of Phase 3 of the Jal-Jeevan-Hariyali campaign and will focus on installing grid-connected rooftop solar plants on government buildings. The projects will be implemented through the Renewable Energy Service Company (RESCO) model.
A meeting with officials from various government departments was held at Vidyut Bhawan in Patna on Wednesday to review the implementation process, the availability of government buildings and the arrangements required for installing the solar plants.
Departments Asked To Submit Building Lists
During the meeting, officials asked all concerned departments to provide lists of government buildings under their jurisdiction. Some departments have already submitted the details, while information from the remaining departments is being collected.
Once the lists are received, the authorities will assess the availability and suitability of the buildings for rooftop solar installations. Further action will be taken based on the findings of this assessment.
The meeting also discussed the draft Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) and the respective roles and responsibilities of BREDA, the concerned government departments and solar developers.
The projects will be taken forward in accordance with the prescribed provisions and the agreed implementation framework.
BREDA Director Calls For Mission-Mode Implementation
BREDA director Rahul Kumar, an IAS officer, directed officials to coordinate with all concerned departments and work in mission mode to meet the target.
He stressed that active participation and cooperation from the departments would be essential to complete the installations within the stipulated timeline.
The agency is seeking to accelerate the process by collecting building details from departments and identifying suitable sites for solar power plants. The target is to establish a total rooftop solar capacity of 500 MW across government buildings by 2029-30.
Initiative To Promote Renewable Energy
Energy Secretary and Bihar State Power Holding Company Limited (BSPHCL) chairman-cum-managing director Ajay Yadav said installing rooftop solar plants on government buildings was an important step towards promoting clean and renewable energy in the state.
He said the initiative would encourage the use of solar power in government establishments and help reduce dependence on conventional electricity. Greater use of alternative energy sources is also expected to support environmental protection.
The programme will require coordination between BREDA, government departments and solar developers. The assessment of available buildings and the finalisation of implementation arrangements are the next steps towards achieving Bihar’s 500 MW rooftop solar target by 2029-30.
