Patna : The Food Safety Department in Patna raided the Shakera Food Products factory on Marcha-Marchi Road in Patna City on Wednesday and seized spices and materials reportedly worth Rs 25 lakh after officials allegedly found suspected adulteration during an inspection.
The factory manufactured spices under the Shakera Masala brand. According to the report, officials found that turmeric and chilli powder were being mixed with industrial-grade colours not intended for use in food products.
The inspection also raised concerns over the alleged mixing of rice bran and paddy husk bran into black pepper and coriander, followed by colouring to make the products appear suitable for sale.
Industrial-Grade Colours Allegedly Found In Spices
During the inspection, officials reportedly found that the colours used in turmeric and chilli powder were non-food-grade industrial dyes.
The report said the colouring material was difficult to remove from the hands, raising further concerns about the substances being used in the manufacturing process.
Authorities also allegedly found rice bran and paddy husk bran mixed into black pepper and coriander before the products were coloured. If confirmed by laboratory testing, such practices would raise serious food safety concerns.
Samples Collected For Laboratory Testing
Officials collected samples of several spices for laboratory examination and sealed the suspected adulterated products and materials found at the premises.
The samples will be used to assess the composition of the products and determine whether they violate applicable food safety standards.
The reported findings also raised concerns about hygiene inside the factory, where officials allegedly found significant dirt and materials used in the suspected adulteration process.
Products Supplied Across Bihar
According to the report, the Shakera Masala brand supplied products to different parts of Bihar, raising concerns about the possible distribution of the suspected adulterated spices.
The seizure and sample collection are part of the inspection process. The final determination of the products’ composition and compliance with food safety requirements will depend on the relevant test results and further action by the authorities.
The department’s action highlights the importance of monitoring spice manufacturing units, checking raw materials and ensuring that products sold to consumers meet food safety standards.
