Patna: Consumers seeking new electricity connections in Bihar will have to pay revised service connection charges from November 1, with the amount determined by the sanctioned load. The new rates will apply to domestic, commercial and industrial consumers across the state.
The Bihar Electricity Regulatory Commission approved the revised charges in July following a petition filed by electricity distribution companies. The companies subsequently communicated the new rates to the districts on July 29.
The revised structure covers new low-tension (LT) electricity connections with a load of up to 150 kilowatts (kW). It is intended to establish charges in advance so that consumers can know the amount payable based on their requested load when applying for a connection.
The rates will apply in areas where electricity infrastructure is already available. After payment, the distribution company will provide the required service line and wiring up to the meter, subject to technical requirements.
Single-phase connection charges
For LT single-phase connections, covering loads of up to 7 kW, the revised charges are:
- Up to 3 kW: Rs 900
- Above 3 kW: Rs 2,700, plus Rs 1,000 for every additional kW
Three-phase connection charges
For LT three-phase connections, the charges will depend on the sanctioned load.
For connections in the 5–19 kW category:
- Up to 5 kW: Rs 4,500
- Above 5 kW: Rs 4,500, plus Rs 1,500 for every additional kW
For connections in the 20–44 kW category:
- Up to 20 kW: Rs 21,000
- Above 20 kW: Rs 21,000, plus Rs 2,000 for every additional kW
Distribution companies issue implementation directives
Both power distribution companies have issued instructions to their respective zones, divisions and sub-divisions to implement the revised charges.
Applications for new electricity connections will be processed according to the prescribed rates from November 1. Consumers will therefore have to pay the revised service connection charges instead of the earlier fee structure.
