Patna: Sony India Pvt. Ltd. has been directed to refund Rs 50,990 to a Patna consumer after failing to repair his defective LED television during the warranty period. The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, Patna, has also ordered the company to pay 9 per cent annual interest, Rs 20,000 as compensation and Rs 10,000 towards litigation costs.

The case concerns Praveen Kumar, a Patna resident who purchased a Sony LED television for Rs 50,990. The television developed a fault while it was still under warranty.

Television Could Not Be Repaired Due to Spare Part Shortage

According to the complaint, Kumar approached the company’s authorised service centre after the television malfunctioned. However, the service centre could not repair the device because the required spare part was unavailable.

Despite repeated complaints, the issue remained unresolved, prompting Kumar to approach the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission.

Commission Orders Refund With 9% Annual Interest

The Commission held Sony India deficient in providing services and directed it to refund the full purchase price of Rs 50,990.

The refund will carry 9 per cent annual interest calculated from November 24, 2016, the date the consumer complaint was filed, until the payment is made.

The company has also been directed to pay Rs 20,000 as compensation and Rs 10,000 towards litigation expenses. The amounts must be paid within 60 days.

Order Passed on October 27

The order was passed on October 27, 2026, by a bench comprising District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission President Prem Ranjan Mishra and Member Rajnish Kumar.
