Madhubani: In a landmark event organized by the Department of Art, Culture and Youth, Government of Bihar, the world’s longest Mithila painting was created on Sunday at the Mithila Chitrakala Sansthan in Madhubani. The ambitious initiative brought together 910 artists from across the state, who collaboratively painted 182 themes over a 1900-foot canvas in a single day.
The event, which began at 8 am, witnessed the participation of 157 volunteers and the collaboration of prominent institutions and renowned Mithila artists. This collective effort highlighted the rich cultural heritage of Mithila art and brought it into global focus.
Prominent contributors to the project included artists from institutions such as Upendra Maharathi Shilp Anusandhan, Arts and Crafts College (Patna), Srujan Mithila (Darbhanga), National Institute of Mithila Art (Darbhanga), Mithila Mantra, and Jeevika’s Product Group.
Distinguished Mithila artists, including Padma Shri recipients Dulari Devi and Shivan Paswan, along with Dr. Rani Jha, Sanjay Jaiswal, Pratik Prabhakar, and other notable figures like Ashok Paswan, Ganesh Paswan, and Asha Devi, also graced the occasion.
Artists from districts across Bihar, including Patna, Darbhanga, Muzaffarpur, Saharsa, and Bhagalpur, showcased their skills and dedication, contributing to the grand artwork.
The Mithila Chitrakala Sansthan assigned around 200 themes to the artists, reflecting the cultural and mythological richness of the region. These themes included depictions of Mother Sita’s birth, Lord Ram’s birth, key moments from Swayamvar, Kohbar, Varmala, Shiva Vivah, traditional Aripan patterns, folk tales, and vibrant cultural scenes of Mithila.
Students from the Mithila Chitrakala Sansthan played a crucial role in the event’s success, demonstrating immense hard work and passion.
This historic endeavor not only showcased the depth of Bihar’s artistic tradition but also gave a new dimension to Mithila painting, propelling the art form onto the global stage.
