Patna: A serious case of financial irregularity has come to light at AIIMS Patna, where the hospital’s chief cashier has been arrested for allegedly misusing government funds. The accused, 39-year-old Anurag Aman, was taken into custody by police and sent to judicial jail after an investigation revealed that a large amount of hospital cash had gone missing. The incident has raised concerns about financial supervision at the state’s leading government medical institute.
The matter surfaced when the Finance and Accounts Officer of AIIMS Patna received an internal report showing a mismatch between the cash collected by the hospital and the amount deposited in the bank. The report covered the period from April 1, 2025, to December 31, 2025, and pointed to a difference of around Rs 44.50 lakh. Taking the issue seriously, the AIIMS administration immediately suspended Anurag Aman and removed him from all financial responsibilities.
To verify the situation, a surprise physical check of the cash vault was conducted on January 4, 2026, by officials from the Finance and Accounts Department in the presence of security staff. During this verification, only Rs 1,51,280 in cash was found in the vault, excluding coins. This confirmed a shortage of Rs 42,98,720. As the chief cashier, Aman was responsible for the cash vault and for depositing the hospital’s daily collections into the bank.
During questioning, Aman reportedly admitted that he had withdrawn Rs 42.99 lakh from the cash vault. In a written statement given on January 5, 2026, he confessed that the money had been deposited into his wife’s bank accounts on different dates. Following a complaint filed by senior administrative officer Raj Kumar Jalan, a case was registered at Phulwarisharif police station on January 7 under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. Police arrested Aman soon after, and further investigation is under way to check if there were other lapses or people involved.
