Bhagalpur: A major spiritual and tourism project is set to take shape in Bhagalpur, with the Isha Foundation planning to establish a large yoga centre and an Adiyogi Shiva temple.
The proposed project will feature a 112-foot-tall statue of Shiva, similar to the iconic Adiyogi statues in Coimbatore and Bengaluru.
For the development, the foundation has requested 100 to 120 acres of land from the district administration. Following the proposal, the state’s tourism department has initiated the process, seeking a detailed report on land availability from local authorities.
Officials said instructions have been issued to identify suitable land parcels for the project. The move comes as part of efforts to create a major spiritual hub in eastern India, reducing the need for devotees from northern regions to travel long distances.
The proposed centre will function as a comprehensive spiritual and wellness hub. Along with the towering statue, it will include a meditation hall, healthcare facilities, and regular programmes focused on yoga and meditation.
Authorities indicated that the land will be provided on a long-term lease of 99 years, with provisions for extension. A similar proposal had earlier been considered for Patna but did not materialise.
Experts believe the project could significantly boost religious tourism in Bihar, attracting large numbers of visitors annually. It is also expected to generate employment and contribute to the region’s economic development.
If implemented, the initiative could transform Bhagalpur into a prominent spiritual destination on the national map.
