Patna: AIIMS Patna celebrated International Nurses Day 2026 on Tuesday with a special programme recognising the contribution of nurses to patient care and public health.
Held at the institute auditorium, the event followed this year’s global theme, “Our Nurses, Our Future – Empowered Nurses Save Lives.” The ceremony brought together healthcare professionals, faculty members and senior officials to honour the role of nurses in strengthening healthcare services.
One of the key highlights of the event was an address by Chief Nursing Officer Dr Rathish Nair, who paid tribute to Florence Nightingale, recalling her journey from the “Lady with the Lamp” to a pioneering figure in modern nursing.
During the programme, AIIMS Patna also launched its “Plastic-Free Campus” campaign as part of its push towards environmentally responsible healthcare practices. The initiative was formally unveiled by Dr Rathish Nair and senior institute officials.

The chief guest at the event, Dr Bindey Kumar, Director of Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, praised nursing professionals for their dedication and resilience, and stressed the importance of continued recognition and empowerment within the healthcare system.
Among those present were Prof (Brig) Dr Raju Agarwal, Executive Director of AIIMS Patna, Medical Superintendent Prof Dr Anup Kumar, Dean (Student Affairs) Prof Dr Ruchi Sinha and Deputy Director (Administration) Nilotpal Bal.
Addressing the gathering, Prof Agarwal described nurses as the “backbone” of every healthcare institution and acknowledged their tireless service.
The celebration also marked the conclusion of a week-long series of activities organised under “Nurses Week”. From May 4 to 10, the institute hosted sports events aimed at promoting teamwork, fitness and camaraderie among healthcare workers.
On May 9, the institute organised a blood donation camp at its blood bank, where employees from different departments voluntarily donated blood. According to the institute, the drive collected 65 units of blood.
The programme concluded with cultural performances, appreciation ceremonies and a renewed commitment to compassionate and patient-centred healthcare led by empowered nursing professionals.
