Patna: All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Patna, in collaboration with the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) and the Society for Communication in Healthcare (India), will organise a National Academic Programme on Communication in Healthcare on July 5 at the AIIMS Patna Auditorium.

The programme, themed “From Empathy to Patient Safety: Strengthening Professional Communication in Clinical Practice”, aims to highlight the importance of effective communication in healthcare by promoting empathy, patient safety, teamwork, informed decision-making and ethical, patient-centred clinical practice.

Participation from Across India

According to the organisers, around 650 to 700 delegates are expected to attend the programme. Participants will include healthcare leaders, medical educators, clinicians, postgraduate trainees and healthcare professionals from across the country.

The event will feature expert lectures, academic discussions and interactive sessions designed to equip healthcare professionals with evidence-based communication strategies that can improve clinical outcomes and strengthen public confidence in healthcare institutions.

Dignitaries to Attend Inaugural Session

The inaugural session will be attended by Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary as the chief guest.

Dr. Abhijat Sheth, Chairman of the National Medical Commission (NMC) and President of NBEMS, will attend as the guest of honour. Dr. Minu Bajpai, Executive Director and Vice-President of NBEMS, will also be present.

Organising Committee

The programme is being organised under the patronage of Prof. (Brig.) Dr. Raju Agarwal, Executive Director and CEO of AIIMS Patna, and Dr. S. N. Basu, Member of the Governing Body of NBEMS, Chairperson of the NBEMS Professional Committee for Communication Skill Development and President of the Society for Communication in Healthcare (India).

Dr. Usha Didwania is serving as the organising chairperson, while Dr. Mukta Agarwal, Professor and Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at AIIMS Patna, is the organising secretary.

Focus on Communication as a Clinical Competency

Ahead of the event, Prof. (Brig.) Dr. Raju Agarwal said the programme reflects AIIMS Patna’s commitment to developing healthcare professionals who combine clinical expertise with compassionate communication.

“This academic initiative reflects AIIMS Patna’s commitment to nurturing healthcare professionals who are not only clinically competent but also compassionate communicators. We are delighted to partner with NBEMS in advancing this important dimension of medical education,” he said.

National Initiative to Strengthen Healthcare Communication

The organisers said communication has become an essential competency in healthcare, extending beyond the exchange of clinical information to include empathy, shared decision-making, ethical practice, teamwork and patient engagement.

Recognising this need, NBEMS has launched a nationwide initiative to strengthen communication skills among healthcare professionals, with AIIMS Patna selected as the host institution for the national academic programme.

According to the organisers, the initiative reinforces the shared commitment of NBEMS and AIIMS Patna to advancing medical education, professional development and patient-centred healthcare. By bringing together experts and practitioners from across the country, the programme aims to contribute to improving communication standards in healthcare institutions nationwide.
