Patna, 29.03.2026: In the first fragile moments of life, a newborn’s cry is the most precious sound and sometimes, the hardest to hear. Recognizing the critical importance of those first breaths, the Department of Neonatology at AIIMS Patna, in collaboration with the Indian Academy of Pediatrics, held a transformative Basic Neonatal Resuscitation Training-of-Trainers (NRP ToT) Workshop on March 28, 2026.
Doctors and nursing officers gathered for a day of intensive, hands-on learning, where classrooms were transformed into simulated delivery rooms. Participants engaged in realistic scenarios, mastering vital interventions to manage perinatal asphyxia, a leading cause of neonatal mortality in India. The workshop focused on the crucial “golden minute” after birth, emphasizing rapid assessment and resuscitation techniques that can save newborn lives.
The event was graced by Prof. (Brig.) Dr. Raju Agarwal, Executive Director of AIIMS Patna, who highlighted the importance of translating training into action and encouraged participants to disseminate their knowledge widely. Dean Academics Prof. (Dr.) Punam Prasad Bhadani and Medical Superintendent Prof. (Dr.) Anup Kumar also graced the occasion with their blessings. Prof. (Dr.) Nigam Prakash Narain, President of the IAP Bihar State Branch, lauded the initiative, stressing the need for continuous skill-building and academic engagement to strengthen neonatal care.
The workshop was led by Dr. Om Prakash and coordinated by Dr. Richie Dalai, with mentorship from expert faculty, including Dr. Amit Kumar, Dr. Bhabesh Kant Chowdhry, Dr. Rameshwar Prasad and Dr. Keshav Kumar Pathak. Their combined expertise ensured that participants gained not only technical proficiency but also the confidence and critical thinking required to handle real-life neonatal emergencies. Participants, including those from Kerala and West Bengal, received the training and became Basic NRP trainers to train other healthcare workers.
What truly distinguished the workshop was its spirit of commitment and collaboration. Participants pledged to become trainers themselves, carrying forward the mission to conduct similar sessions at their own institutions, multiplying the impact and creating a strong network of skilled healthcare providers dedicated to improving newborn survival rates.
This workshop was more than training, it was a promise: that every baby deserves a first breath, a chance to survive and a future full of possibilities. Through such initiatives, AIIMS Patna is shaping a future where the first moments of life are met with preparedness, precision and compassion, bringing the vision of safer beginnings for every child one step closer to reality.
