Patna: Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar is expected to resign from his membership of the state legislative council on Monday, following his election to the Rajya Sabha.
Officials said Nitish is likely to meet Awadhesh Narayan Singh, the chairman of the legislative council, to formally submit his resignation, as required under constitutional provisions.
Under the rules, a member of the legislative council must personally submit their resignation to the chairman, while a member of the legislative assembly is required to submit theirs to the speaker.
The move follows Nitish’s election to the Rajya Sabha earlier this month. As per constitutional norms, individuals elected to Parliament must relinquish their membership of a state legislature within 14 days.
Nitish, who is currently serving his fourth term in the legislative council, was set to continue in the role until 2030.
Ahead of the resignation, the chief minister held discussions with senior leaders of the Janata Dal (United) at his residence. Those present included acting party president Sanjay Jha, Union minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh, and state ministers Vijay Kumar Chaudhary and Ashok Chaudhary.
Mokama MLA Anant Singh also met Nitish and told reporters that some leaders had urged the chief minister to reconsider his decision, though Nitish remained firm.
Officials said Nitish is expected to take oath as a Rajya Sabha member in April, marking a transition in his political role while continuing as chief minister for the time being.
