Patna : AIIMS Patna has achieved a major milestone in its organ transplantation programme by successfully performing its third liver transplant overall and second liver transplant in two months, along with its first deceased-donor kidney transplant.
The coordinated multi-organ donation and transplantation procedure also takes AIIMS Patna’s total number of renal transplants to 15. The donor’s second kidney was allocated through the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO), Bihar, for transplantation within the state.
The liver transplant was performed on October 2 on a 29-year-old man suffering from Wilson disease and end-stage liver disease. The approximately 12-hour deceased-donor liver transplant was successfully completed, and the patient is recovering under multidisciplinary medical supervision.
The procedure was performed by the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology, led by Prof. Dr Utpal Anand, along with Dr Kunal Parasar, Dr Basant Narayan Singh and Dr Kislay Kant.
Anaesthesia and perioperative management were led by Prof. Dr Nishant Sahay, supported by Dr Kunal Singh and Dr Rajnish Kumar. Postoperative care was provided by the Critical Care Unit, including Dr Ajeet Kumar.
Multi-Organ Donation Helps Multiple Patients
The deceased donor was a resident of Biharsharif who suffered a severe brain injury after falling from stairs and was subsequently declared brain dead in accordance with prescribed medical protocols.
Following counselling by transplant coordinators, the donor’s wife and family consented to organ and tissue donation.
The donor’s liver, both kidneys and both corneas were retrieved through a coordinated multi-organ retrieval procedure. The liver and one kidney were transplanted at AIIMS Patna, while the second kidney was handed over through SOTTO Bihar for allocation and transplantation within the state.
The corneas were also donated for sight-restoring transplantation.
19-Year-Old Kidney Recipient Freed From Dialysis
The deceased-donor kidney was transplanted into a 19-year-old girl with chronic kidney disease who was dependent on dialysis.
The procedure marked AIIMS Patna’s 15th renal transplant overall and its first deceased-donor renal transplant.
The renal transplant team was led by Dr Kamlesh Gunjan, along with Dr Naveen Kumar, Dr Saket Singh and Dr Nitish Kumar. Anaesthesia support was provided by Dr Abhyuday Kumar and Dr Neeraj Kumar.
The recipient’s evaluation, medical optimisation and post-transplant management were handled by the Department of Nephrology, led by Prof. Amresh Krishna, along with Dr Megha Saigal.
Coordinated Effort Across Departments
The multi-organ transplantation involved teams from Surgical Gastroenterology, Renal Transplant Surgery, Nephrology, Anaesthesiology and Critical Care.
The procedure was also supported by transplant coordinators, nursing teams, blood bank, radiology, laboratory services, operation theatre personnel, hospital administration and other departments.
The programme was carried out under the guidance of Executive Director Prof. (Brig.) Raju Agarwal, with support from Medical Superintendent Prof. Prashant Kumar Singh.
Deputy Director (Administration) Shri Nilotpal Bal coordinated administrative arrangements related to organ donation, retrieval, allocation, transportation and transplantation.
Second Kidney Allocated Through SOTTO Bihar
The allocation of the donor’s second kidney through SOTTO Bihar highlights coordination between AIIMS Patna and the state’s organ transplant network.
SOTTO Bihar maintains a waiting list of patients requiring organ transplants and allocates donated organs according to established rules, enabling distribution among eligible recipients across the state.
AIIMS Patna Thanks Donor’s Family
AIIMS Patna expressed its gratitude to the donor and family for consenting to organ and tissue donation.
According to the institute, the donation provided multiple patients with an opportunity for life-saving transplantation, freedom from dialysis and restoration of sight.
With its third liver transplant overall, second liver transplant in two months, 15th renal transplant and first deceased-donor renal transplant, AIIMS Patna said it is continuing to expand its transplantation services and make advanced transplant care more accessible to patients in Bihar and neighbouring regions.
