Arthshila, Bihar’s first vertical underground auditoriumPatna: A new cultural landmark has taken shape on Gola Road with the opening of Arthshila, a purpose-built vertical auditorium that extends 40 feet underground and rises 60 feet above ground level. Designed as an immersive performance venue, the structure departs from conventional auditorium formats, offering a quieter, more controlled environment for theatre, music and literary events.
Constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 45 crore and completed over nearly a decade, Arthshila has been conceived as more than a performance hall. Its unusual vertical design allows the core performance spaces to be located beneath the surface, insulating audiences from traffic noise, heat and light. The result is a calm, distraction-free setting intended to deepen engagement with the arts.
Four subterranean floors form the heart of the building, creating what organisers describe as an underground world dedicated to culture. Equipped with modern lighting, ventilation and stage technology, the venue can host plays, classical concerts, poetry readings and experimental performances. It is the first fully functional underground auditorium of its kind in Bihar, designed specifically to prioritise acoustics and intimacy.
Sound engineering remains one of the project’s defining features. Designed by architect Saurabh Gupta, the hall distributes sound evenly across the seating area, allowing performers to be heard clearly without microphones. The natural amplification ensures even the last row receives the same clarity as the front, making the space particularly suitable for theatre and classical music, where precision matters.
The architecture draws inspiration from ancient Greek theatres, where seating tiers and stage alignment create a direct connection between performer and audience. Despite occupying limited land, the structure achieves a strong visual presence, aided by the use of durable materials such as corten steel that lend the building a contemporary finish.
The foundation stone for Arthshila was laid on April 23, 2016 in the presence of cultural figures including Gulzar, Shyam Benegal, Pandit Birju Maharaj, Subodh Gupta and Sanjana Kapoor. After 10 years of construction and planning, the 120-seat auditorium has opened to visitors, offering free entry to exhibitions from 11 am to 7 pm, with the venue closed on Mondays.
Backed by the Takshashila Educational Society, founder Sanjeev Kumar describes Arthshila as a long-envisioned project aimed at creating a meeting point for art, culture and reflection. Beyond functioning as an auditorium, the centre is expected to host local, national and international artists, contributing to the region’s evolving cultural identity.
With its combination of underground design, acoustic precision and intimate scale, Arthshila represents a new model for performance spaces — one where architecture itself becomes part of the artistic experience.
