Patna: Voting for the Bankipur Assembly by-election concluded on Thursday with a voter turnout of 34.30% recorded by 6 pm, according to election authorities. The figure continues the trend of low participation in the constituency, where turnout has remained between 35% and 41% in recent elections.

The subdued turnout has prompted speculation over its political implications, particularly for Jan Suraaj, whose founder, Prashant Kishor, had repeatedly argued that higher voter participation would be essential for bringing political change in the constituency.

Low Turnout Raises Questions

Polling trends indicated sluggish participation from the morning, with relatively few voters seen at polling stations by 11 am.

Political observers suggested that voter fatigue may have played a role, with the bypoll taking place less than a year after the previous election. Others pointed to a possible perception among voters that a by-election for a single seat would have limited impact because the government is already in office.

If such sentiments influenced voter behaviour, analysts believe they may have affected parties banking on mobilising new voters, including Jan Suraaj.

Jan Suraaj Seen Mounting a Strong Challenge

Despite the low turnout, reports from polling stations suggested that Jan Suraaj was significantly more organised than in previous elections.

Party workers were actively engaged in booth management throughout the day, indicating a stronger organisational presence than in earlier contests. Political observers noted that the contest appeared considerably closer than before, with Jan Suraaj emerging as the BJP’s principal challenger in several areas.

BJP Focuses on Core Support Base

The BJP’s campaign strategy appeared to centre on ensuring its traditional supporters reached polling booths while avoiding unnecessary controversy during polling.

Party workers monitored voter mobilisation across neighbourhoods, with the emphasis placed on protecting the party’s established vote base rather than expanding turnout. Supporters expressed confidence that their core electorate had largely remained intact despite overall participation remaining low.

Some political observers suggested that while a section of BJP supporters may not have voted, there was little indication that they shifted allegiance to rival parties.

RJD Appears to Lose Ground

The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) appeared to struggle in the contest, according to assessments from polling day.

Despite campaign efforts by Tejashwi Yadav in the final days before voting, the party was not widely seen as the primary challenger in the constituency. Some local political observers reported that a section of opposition-minded voters viewed Jan Suraaj as the stronger challenger to the BJP, potentially reducing support for the RJD.

Result Awaits Final Verdict

While polling-day observations indicate a competitive contest between the BJP and Jan Suraaj, the outcome will ultimately depend on the counting of votes. The low turnout has added uncertainty, making it difficult to predict which party stands to gain the most from reduced voter participation.
