Bhagalpur/Patna: Preparations for the annual Shravani Mela in Sultanganj are gathering pace, with the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) focusing on drinking water arrangements for pilgrims.
The department has begun repair and maintenance of hand pumps across the mela zone to ensure continuous access to potable water during the pilgrimage season.
Officials said the work is being treated as a priority, given the expected footfall of lakhs of Kanwariyas.
Survey of 288 hand pumps completed
PHED has completed a survey of all 288 hand pumps installed in the mela area, including both old and newly installed units.
The assessment found that around 88 hand pumps were in need of repairs. Officials said these units have been identified for immediate restoration.
Repair work under way
The department said repair work has been in progress for the past four days.
So far, more than 50 hand pumps have been repaired and made operational. Special teams have been deployed to complete the remaining work before the mela begins.
Officials said the aim is to ensure that the maximum number of water points are functional before pilgrims start arriving in large numbers.
Upgrades to improve hygiene
In addition to repairs, PHED is also carrying out painting work and constructing platforms around operational hand pumps.
The department said these measures are intended to improve cleanliness and make water access more convenient for pilgrims.
Water quality checks planned
PHED officials said all hand pumps will undergo water quality testing once repair work is completed.
A monitoring mechanism is also being put in place to ensure that contaminated water is not supplied during the mela.
Focus on pilgrim convenience
The department said ensuring safe and uninterrupted drinking water remains a key part of the state’s preparations for the Shravani Mela.
Officials said resources have been mobilised to complete the work on time and improve facilities for pilgrims visiting Sultanganj.
