Patna: Patna hosted a major discussion on Thursday on the rise of obscenity in Bhojpuri songs. The event, called Cine Samvad, was organised by the Bihar State Film Development and Finance Corporation at Bihar Lalit Kala Academy. The focus was on finding ways to stop vulgar lyrics from dominating the music scene.
Popular Bhojpuri singer Bharat Sharma Vyas said obscenity has given Bhojpuri a bad name. He blamed not only singers and writers but also listeners who encourage such songs. “Thirty years ago Bhojpuri songs had no obscenity. Today, in the race for views, people use bad words. This must stop,” he said.
Other speakers supported his view. Activist Nand Kumar Tiwari said singers and writers should take an oath to never create double-meaning songs. The Film Corporation’s general manager Ruby said Bihar has a proud tradition of folk and classical music that should be promoted. Officials added that good music can still bring money, fame and audience without vulgar content.
Film Corporation advisor Arvind Ranjan Das called obscenity a “stain” on Bihar’s entertainment industry. He said strong steps are needed to clean Bhojpuri music and restore its lost respect. The Cine Samvad programme is part of the state’s larger effort to support films and music through workshops, festivals and scholarships.
Bharat Sharma Vyas, known as the “Bhojpuri Samrat”, has sung thousands of songs in his five-decade career. He has performed across India and abroad and won many awards, including the Sangeet Natak Academy Award in 2023. He has always spoken against vulgar songs and continues to urge Bhojpuri artists to protect the dignity of their music.
