Patna : Patna University is set for a transformative expansion, modelled on the framework of Delhi University, with plans to establish two distinct campuses and introduce modern infrastructure aimed at enhancing student life and academic facilities.
The proposed expansion includes a new South Campus in Saidpur, approximately 4km from the main academic hub. Estimated at a cost of Rs 750 crore, the South Campus will be developed as a fully residential complex. A detailed proposal, including architectural models, has been submitted to the state education department for approval.
Once completed, the campus will accommodate hostels for nearly 7,000 students and feature dedicated residential buildings for faculty and staff. In a first for the university, the site will also include recreational and lifestyle amenities such as a football field, a volleyball court, and a swimming pool. A mini-market complex is also part of the blueprint, aimed at meeting daily needs of students and staff, and will be located near the Bazar Samiti complex.
The campus will be developed as a ‘green campus’ with an emphasis on sustainability. Plans include five to six high-rise buildings (G+10), with ample open spaces dedicated to sports and leisure activities.
The land earmarked for the South Campus was originally acquired by the university in 1956, covering around 35 acres. However, in 2017, seven acres were allocated to the proposed Science City project nearby.
University officials say the North and South Campuses will mirror the functional and administrative structure of Delhi University, allowing for a decentralised yet cohesive academic environment.
