Patna: The Indian government has approved the establishment of 19 new Kendriya Vidyalayas (Central Schools) across Bihar, in a move that comes just months before the state’s 2025 assembly elections. The decision, taken by the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, forms part of a wider plan to open 57 new Kendriya Vidyalayas across the country, backed by a budget of Rs 5,862 crore.

The new schools will be spread across 16 districts in Bihar, including Patna, Gaya, Muzaffarpur, Munger, Darbhanga, and Madhubani. Currently, India has 1,288 Kendriya Vidyalayas, three of which operate abroad, collectively educating more than 1.3 million students.

Among the proposed locations in Bihar are SSB 20th Battalion, Paktola, Sitamarhi; ITBP, Katihar; Kaimur; Jhanjharpur; Madhubani; Sheikhupur Sarai and Jamoura, Sheikhpura; Madhepura; Walmi, Patna; Arwal; Purnia; Ara, Bhojpur; Bela Industrial Area, Muzaffarpur; Digha, Patna; Darbhanga No. 3; Bhagalpur Town; Bihar Sharif; and Bodh Gaya.

Gaya MP and Union Minister Jitendra Singh Manjhi welcomed the decision on social media, noting that the opening of a Kendriya Vidyalaya in Bodh Gaya had been a long-standing demand. Posting on the day of Mahanavami, he credited Prime Minister Modi’s support for the development.

The announcement comes amid heightened political activity in Bihar as parties prepare for the upcoming assembly elections, signalling continued investment in education infrastructure ahead of the polls.
