Patna: Bihar is on the cusp of adding a significant new chapter to its infrastructure development, with the ambitious Bakhtiyarpur-Tajpur four-lane project approaching completion. Designed to connect north and south Bihar, the project has already achieved around 65% progress under the supervision of the state’s road construction authorities.
Officials say the road component of the project is expected to be completed by December this year, while the much-anticipated bridge over the Ganga is scheduled to open to traffic by June next year. Built at a cost of Rs 3,929 crore, the project is being positioned as a potential lifeline for the state’s transport network.
A key milestone has already been reached with the completion of all 44 pillars of the bridge. Engineers are now focusing on the superstructure, placing segments atop the pillars at an accelerated pace. Construction activity on both the Bakhtiyarpur and Samastipur sides is reported to be progressing steadily.
Once operational, the bridge is expected to ease the long-standing pressure on existing crossings, which have carried heavy traffic loads for decades. The project is also set to strengthen Bihar’s national highway connectivity by linking NH-31 at Bakhtiyarpur directly with NH-28 at Tajpur in Samastipur.
Work on the Tajpur to Chaklalshahi stretch has already been completed, while the remaining sections are advancing rapidly. The new route will offer a faster alternative for vehicles travelling from Muzaffarpur, Begusarai and Samastipur to Patna and other parts of south Bihar, reducing travel time and fuel consumption.
Beyond improving mobility, the project is expected to open up a new economic corridor. By directly connecting the Mithila and Magadha regions, it is likely to facilitate trade flows within the state. It may also emerge as a shorter route for commercial traffic between Nepal and Jharkhand.
Improved access to religious sites, educational institutions and healthcare facilities is anticipated to bring tangible benefits to residents, particularly in underserved areas. With its combination of transport efficiency and economic potential, the project is being viewed as a milestone in Bihar’s broader development strategy.
