Patna: The Bihar government is considering a proposal to facilitate the establishment of a campus of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in the state as part of efforts to strengthen higher education infrastructure and expand academic opportunities for students.
Education Minister Mithilesh Tiwari said the state government is serious about the initiative and plans to hold discussions with senior officials of the Higher Education Department and the university administration in the coming period.
Government offers support for proposed campus
The minister said the government is willing to extend all necessary support for the project, including the provision of land if the proposal receives approval from the university authorities.
According to Tiwari, the initiative aims to improve access to quality higher education and create additional academic opportunities for students within Bihar.
Focus on strengthening higher education
The minister said a BHU campus in Bihar could contribute to the state’s higher education ecosystem by providing access to programmes offered by one of India’s leading central universities.
He added that the state government is working to strengthen educational infrastructure in line with the National Education Policy, with emphasis on expanding academic facilities, research opportunities and employment-oriented courses.
Academic collaboration seen as a possibility
Tiwari noted that several senior academics and department heads associated with BHU have roots in Bihar and have expressed interest in contributing to educational development in the state.
He said such academic engagement could help support future discussions related to the proposal.
Potential benefits for students and research
Education experts believe that, if implemented, the project could provide students with access to higher education opportunities closer to home, particularly those who face financial constraints in pursuing studies outside the state.
A university campus could also support research, innovation and academic collaboration while contributing to local economic activity and employment generation.
Proposal at a preliminary stage
The proposal remains at an early stage, with formal discussions between the Bihar government and BHU yet to take place.
However, the announcement has generated interest among students, parents and educational stakeholders, who view it as a potential step towards expanding higher education opportunities in the state.
Any future decision regarding the establishment of a BHU campus will depend on consultations between the university administration and the state government.
