Patna: Bihar needs to fill 2,624 pharmacist posts in government hospitals, including 1,603 vacancies remaining under an ongoing recruitment process and 1,021 newly created posts, according to the Diploma Pharmacist Organisation Students’ Union.
The Bihar Technical Service Commission (BTSC) has been conducting recruitment for 2,473 pharmacist posts. Of these, 870 diploma pharmacists have been appointed so far, while recruitment for the remaining 1,603 posts is pending.
The Diploma Pharmacist Organisation Students’ Union on Sunday urged the state government to expedite recruitment against the pending and newly created posts to strengthen medicine distribution, storage and stock management in government hospitals.
The organisation said a large number of vacant pharmacist posts could affect the distribution of medicines and the management of hospital drug inventories.
Organisation Seeks Recruitment as per Rules and Court Orders
Arvind Kumar Chaudhary, state president of the organisation, said the recruitment process should proceed in accordance with the government’s pharmacist recruitment rules and judicial orders to avoid unnecessary delays in filling vacancies.
He said the prescribed qualification under the state’s pharmacist recruitment rules is a Diploma in Pharmacy (DPharm).
According to Chaudhary, the Patna High Court, in its order dated April 10, 2025, upheld DPharm as the mandatory qualification for pharmacist recruitment. The Supreme Court subsequently upheld the High Court’s decision on January 16, 2026.
The organisation has called on the state government to complete the recruitment process at the earliest to address staff shortages and improve medicine management in government healthcare facilities.
