Patna: The Bihar government has approved the establishment and operation of five new private universities across the state, in a move aimed at expanding higher education opportunities and strengthening academic infrastructure.
The decision was taken during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat on Wednesday. Chaudhary later announced the approvals through social media.
Under the cabinet decision, private universities will be established in Patna, Madhubani, Siwan, Nawada and Aurangabad districts. The approved institutions include Shanja University in Madhubani, a private university in Siwan, S.A. University in Ashok Nagar of Nawada district, Himalaya University in Patna, and Seetyog University at Jasoiya Mor in Aurangabad.
Expanding Access To Higher Education
State officials said the move is intended to increase the availability of higher education opportunities within Bihar and reduce the need for students to move outside the state for university studies.
The new institutions are expected to offer a range of undergraduate, postgraduate and professional programmes, helping to accommodate growing demand for higher education.

Push To Strengthen Bihar’s Education Sector
The approvals form part of broader efforts to improve educational infrastructure and attract investment into Bihar’s academic sector.
Officials believe the expansion of private universities will contribute to skill development, research and employment generation while creating additional educational opportunities for students across different regions of the state.
Education City Project Also Advances
Separately, the Bihar government is moving closer to implementing its proposed Education City project in the Fatuha industrial area of Patna district.
More than 600 acres of land have been identified for the project after the Department of Revenue and Land Reforms completed the land identification process, resolving a key hurdle that had delayed implementation.
The project, which received cabinet approval in December 2025, is expected to attract investment exceeding Rs 1,000 crore and create an integrated ecosystem for higher education, research and employment generation.
