Patna: In a move described as both emotional and historic, the Bihar cabinet on Friday approved a proposal to celebrate the birth anniversary of late Sushil Kumar Modi, former Deputy Chief Minister and Padma Bhushan awardee, as an official state function every year on January 5.
The decision follows the unveiling of Sushil Kumar Modi Smriti Park — formerly Rani Park — in Patna’s Rajendra Nagar by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on May 13, marking Modi’s first death anniversary. During the commemoration, the chief minister also announced the installation of a life-size statue of the late leader in the park, recognising his significant role in Bihar’s political and economic reconstruction.
The cabinet’s approval to elevate Sushil Modi’s birth anniversary to a state event honours his legacy as a key architect of Bihar’s good governance model, known for financial discipline, transparency, and dedication to public service.
Members of the Sushil Kumar Modi Smriti Shodh Sansthan, including chairman Sanjay Gupta and former aides of the late leader, welcomed the cabinet’s decision, expressing gratitude to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Deputy Chief Ministers Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Sinha, and other senior BJP leaders and ministers.
Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, paying tribute to Sushil Modi, said, “Sushil Modi ji was not only the architect of good governance in Bihar but also set an enduring example of financial discipline and transparency. His life was one of struggle, loyalty and unwavering dedication to nation-building.”
