Patna : Bihar is preparing a new skill development framework for undergraduate students under the National Education Policy (NEP), with a focus on artificial intelligence, practical skills and industrial training alongside regular degree education. The initiative is being prepared by the Governor and Chancellor’s Secretariat and is expected to be introduced across universities in the state.
Under the proposed plan, a Student Skill Development Cell will be established in every university. Directions for setting up these cells are expected to be issued to vice-chancellors by the Governor’s Secretariat.
AI And Industry Training Alongside Degrees
The initiative comes as Bihar’s universities have adopted four-year undergraduate programmes under the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS). A common programme is now being prepared to introduce AI education, skill development and industry-oriented training within undergraduate education.
The objective is to ensure that students are not limited to earning academic degrees but also gain practical and employment-oriented skills during their college years. The proposed framework will focus on preparing students for changing workplace requirements and emerging areas of technology.
The Governor’s Secretariat is also preparing guidelines for skill development training for undergraduate students. These guidelines will be shared with all constituent and affiliated colleges across the state once finalised.
268 Colleges To Get Industry-Linked Training
The programme will cover students studying in 268 constituent colleges across Bihar. Under the proposed system, students will receive training connected with industry requirements, giving them greater exposure to practical skills and workplace expectations.
Experts with experience of working in AI companies will also be brought in to guide students. Their involvement is expected to help students understand the applications of emerging technologies and the skills required in an increasingly technology-driven job market.
The industry-focused approach is intended to strengthen the connection between higher education and employment. Students will receive opportunities to supplement classroom learning with practical exposure and guidance from professionals.
Apprenticeship To Be Linked With Degree Programmes
Another major component of the plan is the introduction of an Apprenticeship Embedded Degree Programme (AEDP) in colleges. The programme will integrate apprenticeship-based practical experience with undergraduate degree courses.
The proposed model is aimed at giving students exposure to real-world work environments while they continue their academic studies. It could also help bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge acquired in classrooms and the practical skills expected by employers.
Focus On Employment Readiness
The new framework represents a broader shift towards skill-based and employment-oriented higher education in Bihar. Along with academic qualifications, students will be encouraged to develop AI awareness, professional skills and industry experience before completing their undergraduate degrees.
The initiative is being aligned with the objectives of NEP 2020, which places greater emphasis on multidisciplinary learning, skill development and stronger links between education and employability.
With Skill Development Cells, industry-linked training and apprenticeship opportunities planned across the state, Bihar’s universities are preparing to give undergraduate students a wider learning experience that extends beyond the conventional degree-focused approach.
